The RCN has published an immunisation competencies resource to support nursing staff who give vaccines.

The updated guidance comes after the RCN called for a nurse-led catch up programme for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) after figures revealed uptake of the jab is at its lowest in a decade.

The UK Health Security Agency said the percentage of two-year-olds having a first dose of the MMR vaccine has fallen below 90%, and below 85.5% for five-year-olds receiving a second dose. This is well below the World Health Organization’s 95% target to achieve and sustain the elimination of measles.

Guidance for all UK nursing staff includes procedures for the safe delivery of vaccines

RCN professional lead for public health Helen Donovan said the pandemic had highlighted just how crucial the role of immunisers was.

‘The tool helps provide assurance that all those involved in immunisation are competent to provide safe and effective care for people who require vaccines.’

The guidance, now in its third edition, includes an assessment tool on the knowledge, skills and procedures for the safe delivery of vaccines, as well as a glossary of terms and links to further resources.

The competencies have been designed for nursing staff across the UK and align with the National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training.
