Effect of smoking cessation on cardiovascular events
Smoking is a major modifiable risk factor for disease and death, and smoking cessation is beneficial in reducing these risks. However, even though cardiovascular events occur mainly in older adults, this age group has been understudied when it comes to the cardiovascular risks of smoking and the potential benefits of smoking cessation.
Even in older age, stopping smoking is beneficial
This study aimed to investigate the effect of smoking and smoking cessation on acute coronary events and stroke in people aged 60 and older. The researchers demonstrated that even at older ages, smoking cessation is beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk. Given the increasing numbers of older people and the higher incidence of cardiovascular events in later life, there is tremendous potential for supporting smoking cessation in this group.
