Essential facts
There are around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) a year in the UK, equivalent to approximately 55 in 100,000 people, says the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK).
Bystanders attempt resuscitation in seven out of ten cases, with NHS ambulance crews attempting resuscitation of around 30,000 people each year.
Public-access defibrillators are used in fewer than one in ten cases.
