Your online security

All of us are concerned about the security of the personal and/or financial information we supply online, so we hope the following will reassure you RCNi takes your privacy seriously.

We use industry-standard encryption methods (PGP) and a secure server (SSL) to collect all personal details. When subscribing or logging on to the archive, you will be diverted to our secure server. You will recognise this from the URL 'https'. The 's' tells you the server is a secure one and that your details can't be viewed elsewhere.

You might also see the padlock symbol at the bottom left of your screen, and/or have a pop-up message that says you are being diverted to a secure server. This means no one else can gain access to your username and password.

Your subscription

Your details are handled in one of two ways, depending on the type of subscription you have:

- '30-day online-only' credit card subscriptions are processed online via the NatWest credit card processing system. As you would expect, all details are handled and verified in a completely secure environment. 

- Subscriptions to printed journals generate encrypted (PGP) emails, which are then forwarded to our subscriptions department. PGP encryption means only a strictly limited number of terminals in our subscriptions department can access this information. This is done via a unique encryption/decryption 'key' installed on our secure web server, and the terminals required to process the subscriptions.

Our privacy policy

From time to time, you will be asked to submit personal information, for example your name and email address, in order to receive or use our website services. 

We will treat this information in accordance with our privacy policy. We will act in accordance with current legislation and aim to comply with current internet best practice.

The website does make use of cookies. They are used mainly to allow us to create 'sessions', for example during a visit to the archive. This means you are not forced to log in each time a new page loads. Our cookies do not identify individual users and no personal information is gathered by us or recorded in them.

Submitting personal information

When you supply any personal information to us we have legal obligations to you in the way we deal with that data.

We must:

- Collect the information fairly – see the notices on particular web pages that let you know why we are requesting the information.
- Let you know how we will use it.
- Tell you in advance if we decide to pass the information on to anyone else. 

Where personal information is held for individuals who are not yet registered but have used other RCNi services, the information will be held only for as long as necessary. We will ensure all personal information supplied is held securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Email marketing

As our services expand, there will be more opportunities to enhance the services we offer you. We might send you details of other RCNi services and products that may be of interest to you, and offer you the chance to subscribe to them. This can happen if, and only if, you consent to being contacted by email when registering with the site.

We might also offer you the opportunity to participate in surveys carried out by RCNi or its agents, that help our research into the types of service we offer. We will keep a record of information provided by you. It will never be supplied to third parties without first obtaining your consent, unless we are obliged by law to disclose information.

Our email policy is strictly 'opt-in', so you won't be added to any email lists unless you want this. You can change your preferences at any time by visiting the archive and following the 'Update my details' link.

If you are a member of the Royal College of Nursing you consent to us updating your membership information with the information provided. To change your membership mailing preferences, including the type of mailing you receive, simply log on to MyRCN. 

Access to your personal information

You have the right to request a copy of the personal information RCNi holds about you and to have any inaccuracies corrected.
