Union invites public to thank nurses for the job they do

Unison aims to highlight work of nurses and other public servants ahead of government spending statement

Patients will have a chance publicly to thank nurses for the care they provide, as part of a new campaign.

The trade union Unison today launches an initiative aimed at reminding the public of the importance of public services, and to warn the government of the risks of cutting them.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis will launch its Public Service Champions campaign at a fringe event at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool later this afternoon.

Their work saves lives

Adverts will appear in the media, the London Underground and major railway stations, and on billboards, publicising a website where the public can nominate a public service worker.

Mr Prentis said: ‘From frontline staff, to the support and technical workers who keep our NHS, schools, police forces and town halls going, our public service workers are champions to so many people.

‘Their work saves lives, educates children, cares for older people and ensures our society flourishes.’

He said the government had the opportunity to show the value of public services by not using November’s autumn statement to make further cuts to services.
