Nurses will be able to obtain free rides and meals during the Christmas period from online taxi and delivery firm Uber.

The offer is available to all NHS staff across England, Scotland and Wales and health and social care staff in Northern Ireland.

‘We owe the NHS a debt of gratitude’

Uber says it will provide up to 200,000 free rides and Uber Eats will deliver more than 80,000 free meals from thousands of restaurants and convenience stores. The company says staff can order a hot meal from a local restaurant or everyday essentials from a nearby shop, to be delivered to their home or even a hospital ward.

Anyone with an NHS or HSC email address will be able to claim two Uber trips worth up to £10 each, and a meal worth up to £10 via Uber Eats. They can be redeemed between 23 and 27 December.

To claim, staff must link a Uber account to their email address by 20 December. Applicants will be sent a promotion code that they must add to their Uber account to claim the offer. Uber made a similar offer last year.

The company’s regional general manager for Northern and Eastern Europe, Jamie Heywood, said: ‘More than ever before, we owe the NHS a debt of gratitude.

A ‘helping hand’ for NHS staff at Christmas

‘NHS nurses, doctors and support staff deserve a helping hand this Christmas, especially during times when travel may be difficult, and services are reduced.’

UK health and social care secretary Matt Hancock said: ‘Everyone has a role to play in our national effort to help the NHS tackle coronavirus, so it’s great to see Uber is offering meals and trips to work for our brilliant NHS staff, as well as discounted trips for care home staff.’

Uber is encouraging customers to show healthcare staff how much they appreciate their work by sharing their thanks on social media.
