Free app uses technology that helps staff raise concerns
Nurses will be able to raise any issues or concerns at work by using an innovative free app designed for their mobile phone or tablet.
The Freedom to Speak Up app, believed to be one of the first of its kind in England, has been launched at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust in a bid to make it easier for staff to raise concerns.
The app was introduced by senior radiographer Heather Bruce, who was appointed as a Freedom to Speak Up guardian by the trust in 2015. Her role is to encourage staff to raise concerns, which should be addressed confidentially and quickly.
The introduction of the guardians was recommended by Sir Robert Francis QC following his report and inquiry into failures at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.
If a member of staff reports concerns through the app, which can be downloaded from Apple or Google Play, Ms Bruce will look into the issues raised and ensure they are addressed appropriately.
Ms Bruce said: ‘The purpose of the app is to give staff another way of speaking up if they want to. Everyone has their phone with them at all times these days and use them to do most things, so it seemed a logical next step for us.’
