A free diabetes training module intended to help reduce insulin errors has been made available to nurses.

The e-learning module Insulin Safety: Getting it Right is free to access for hospital and community trusts, including primary care networks.

People with diabetes who experience insulin administration errors

It was developed by nurse-led diabetes nursing group Trend Diabetes, in response to a National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) in England and Wales that found two in five people with diabetes who are admitted to hospital and who are on insulin experience an error related to its administration while in hospital.

The audit measures the quality of diabetes care provided to people when they are admitted to hospital, whatever the cause, and aims to support quality improvement.

Education to improve insulin safety

Trend Diabetes co-chair and diabetes nurse consultant Debbie Hicks said: ‘Healthcare professionals need to be fully educated about insulin safety in a bid to help eradicate unnecessary errors. We urge all NHS trusts to download and implement this free online course.’

The course, which is available for download by organisations not individuals, incorporates insulin safety training and includes individual learning assessments. The module will be updated as new information becomes available.

The training programme can be used as part of nurses’ revalidation.
