Dr Carter will join Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent as interim chair following his appointment by the council of governors.

He stepped down from his RCN position last year following eight years in the post, and was succeeded by Janet Davies.

Dr Carter said he was delighted to join the Medway trust.

‘It’s clear to see the trust has made significant progress over the past 12 months and I look forward to working with patients, staff and stakeholders to further build on this,’ he said.

Trust chief executive Lesley Dwyer said: ‘We are fortunate to welcome a person of Peter’s calibre and I am confident that we will benefit greatly from his extensive experience and expertise.’

On announcing his departure from the RCN, Dr Carter was described as a ‘tireless champion for his members and the wider healthcare workforce’ by England’s chief nursing officer Jane Cummings.

The trust’s council of governors is currently in the process of appointing a permanent trust chair.
