More planning than ever has gone into managing healthcare this winter in England. Each area has an emergency department (ED) delivery board and there is help on hand to provide support to the areas that are struggling the most.

Social care has been provided with an extra £1 billion to help hospitals discharge patients earlier, while £100 million have been set aside to introduce front-door streaming into all hospitals.

This winter also marks the first major staging post in the overhaul of the urgent and emergency care system.
