The NHS and social care are facing the significant challenges of an ageing workforce, with latest Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) figures showing that more than a third of people on the register are aged 51 or over.

The data, published in May, also show that almost 24,000 people across the UK left the NMC register in 2020-21, with retirement and changes in circumstances the most common reasons for leaving.
