As a nurse, making a mistake can feel like the end of the world.

In a safety-critical profession, errors can have serious consequences – but when they do happen, it is important to deal with them correctly and then try to move on.

Facing and overcoming challenges in the workplace

Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland chief executive and nurse director Sarah Doyle says: ‘If you have a long clinical career it’s not unusual to be in a situation where things go wrong and it’s important to be humble… to be able to learn and to be open to being supported by the people around you as well.

‘It is possible to recover from these things – at some point, it will be behind you.’

This week’s episode of the Nursing Standard podcast is all about facing and overcoming challenges in the workplace – whether that is bouncing back from errors, dealing with staff shortages, reporting concerns, or simply dealing with an ever-increasing patient care workload.

CPD, time management and unsuccessful job interviews

Dr Doyle joins RCNi career development editor Clare Lomas on the podcast, recorded at the RCNi Nursing Careers and Jobs Fair in Glasgow on 19 February, to discuss these and other challenges faced by nurses.
