Nominations are now open for elections to the RCN council after 12 members stepped down following a vote of no confidence in the college's leadership.

A dozen RCN council members resigned last week in the wake of last month’s extraordinary general meeting about the college's handling and communication of the NHS pay deal in England. A majority of the RCN members taking part voted for the council to stand down.

All but one of the council seats up for election are for representatives of the English regions and one each from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. One council position goes to a health practitioner representative.

RCN council elections timetable

  • 8 October RCN council nominations open with forms available on the RCN website.
  • 25 October Nominations close
  • 30 October Names of candidates are published
  • 21 November-11 December Postal ballot on candidates
  • 31 December The 12 council members step down
  • 1 January 2019 New council members take up office until their term ends on 31 December 2019

Those wishing to become regional and country-wide candidates need to be nominated by two nurse members of the college. The health practitioner council position requires candidates nominated by two health practitioner members.

The five council positions unaffected by the no-confidence vote are those of president, deputy president, student council member, eastern region member, and congress chair. These positions were already up for election anyway or their incumbents were only recently appointed.
