A mother who beat breast cancer twice and set up a charity to help others in a similar position has graduated as a midwife.

Nicolette Peel is now a midwife at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Nicolette Peel graduated from Salford University and is now a midwife at the Royal Oldham Hospital, where she completed most of her training.

The mother of three helped to set up a charity after being diagnosed with breast cancer while her youngest child, Frankie, was a baby.

She noticed the lack of support for mums who received a breast cancer diagnosis in pregnancy or postnatally.

The charity Mummy’s Star is dedicated to helping mothers and their families who are affected by breast cancer in pregnancy or within a year of giving birth.

Put into practice

Ms Peel said she was delighted to graduate, and loved her new job.

‘At times it has been a balancing act, and it is thanks to the support of my husband and the lecturers at Salford University that I have been able to fit everything in,’ she said.

‘I really enjoyed my course because it gave me the opportunity to constantly support women and put into practice what I had learnt in the classroom.’

Salford University director of midwifery, counselling and psychotherapy Lisa Bacon said: ‘Nicolette was an exceptional student: motivated, hardworking and a pivotal member of her group.

Incredible support

‘The charity that Nicolette runs offers incredible support to women and their families who are affected by cancer during what should be one of the happiest experiences in their life.’

In October, Ms Peel was the first student ever to be invited to speak on the main stage of the Royal College of Midwives annual conference.

She is also on a steering committee for pregnant asylum seekers in Greater Manchester.

Mummy Star was set up in memory of Mair Wallroth, who died after being diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant with her second child.
