Implementing research in the clinical setting: the road map for implementing research

There are many excellent books that focus on research methodologies, but this one has adopted a different approach focusing on how research can be implemented in practice settings. In doing so, the authors removes the mystic and jargon that is often attributed to research. making research seem both logically and accessible — a feat in itself!

In Chapter 2, Moore equates the process of research to the problem solving model of the nursing process. This framework is one that nurses can relate to as it places research into a familiar context. The chapter on commonly used research methods provides the reader with an appreciation of the different approaches that are available to address clinical questions. A series of action points is included throughout all the chapters and is a defining feature of the text. This enables the practitioner to reflect on their present level of understanding and identify future learning needs, eg ‘write down what you know about qualitative and quantitative research and match up the kinds of clinical problems you know about from your practice setting with the most suitable approach’.

Readers are allowed to develop their own learning plan regarding research implementation and to develop their knowledge and skills at their own pace within the guided framework. Practitioners can use this approach as part of their professional development in accordance with the requirements of PREP.

This book is an essential tool to the individual or course member who is being introduced to the research process and its application in the clinical setting and who requires ‘a map’ to commence the process.
