Action Research for Nurses
They are critical of the entrenched commitment to ‘scientific ways of thinking’ which largely accepts, almost without questioning, that nurses need to learn and apply received technical knowledge to their practices.
While acknowledging the invaluable contribution made by this form of knowledge, the authors bemoan the failure of nurses to argue that practical knowledge is equally important. As they rightly contend, nurses have considerable practical professional knowledge that ‘can contribute to knowledge of the profession and can shape and influence policy debates about the nature of nursing and the directions it should take’.
