University of Southampton chair of health service research Peter Griffiths has been named senior investigator by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The NIHR is funded by the Department of Health (DH), and aims to improve the health of the nation through research. The senior investigator title is decided via a competition every year and recognises the research expertise of an individual in their particular field.

Professor Griffiths, the only academic to receive the award this year, will hold the post for two years and gain access to a £30,000 research grant.

The role will involve:

  • Providing research leadership to the NIHR faculty, promoting clinical and applied research in health and social care.
  • Hosting visiting fellows and mentoring trainees.
  • Providing advice to the DH chief scientific adviser.

Professor Griffiths is only the sixth person in the field of nursing to be made senior investigator; he joins David Richards of the University of Exeter, Karina Lovell and Nicky Cullum from the University of Manchester, Jane Nixon from the University of Leeds and Claire Goodman from the University of Hertfordshire.

Professor Griffiths said: ‘Despite huge technological advances, delivering health care is an essentially human activity, which remains labour intensive.

‘Ensuring we have the right workforce and organisation to deliver high quality and safe care with humanity, now and in the future, is the ultimate aim of my research.’
