A study into research capacity at two universities offered opportunities to both novice and experienced researchers. Here, Julie Douglas and three novice researchers, Yvonne Flood, Sara Morris and Claire Rushton, reflect on their involvement in the collaborative project and how it contributed to individual and institutional development

Research capacity has been described as ‘a general term for a process of individual and institutional development which leads to higher skills and greater ability to perform useful research’ (Trostle 1992). With nursing education around the world moving into higher education, there has been a clear expectation that nurse academics will undertake research in the same way as those in longer-established disciplines.
