Fundamental Aspects of Research for Nurses

AS IDENTIFIED by the authors, this book takes a conventional approach to introducing and discussing the fundamentals of research and the application to nursing and health care.

The text is structured around two main methodologies of qualitative and quantitative research, with only a brief discussion about how these methodologies are used in mixed methods projects. The book is aimed at students, but has content which is relevant to nurses undertaking small research or development projects in the practice setting. The text uses everyday nursing practice and examples of previous research to illustrate the concepts, which is useful when explaining the more complex research methodologies and paradigms at the start of the book.

The section which was particularly comprehensive and offered a good overview of methods and analysis addressed the use of quantitative methods. There is a good discussion around the use of surveys and this would support a student or practitioner to conduct a project in the practice setting. The quantitative sections included many examples and exercises for the reader to complete.

The section which addresses qualitative data collection methods and analysis provides a good overview. But, it could have benefitted from examples or exercises. The qualitative data analysis section is short and the reader would have to seek alternative sources to underpin the use of these methods in a proposal or project.

Although this book does not cover all areas in sufficient depth, it is useful for and accessible to undergraduate nursing students and those being introduced to research.
