Steven Evans-Jones, who works at Dolgellau Hospital, part of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, ensures people have the information they need to improve their lifestyle and health, whether they are visiting outpatients, or are in the community.

To improve links with young people, Steven has been instrumental in developing and co-ordinating a project in which all heathcare students at a local college give a health education presentation to a targeted group.

He works with college tutors to bring small groups of healthcare students to the hospital, demonstrating health care in a practical way.

As an ambassador for men’s health charity Orchid, Steven works to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancers and gives talks and group sessions in the community.

He says: ‘People have got to try to take some sort of responsibility for their health but they need our support and guidance.’

Steven is a finalist in the RCN-sponsored Nursing Assistant category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2016, the profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence.

Staff nurse Anne Thomas works with Steven in the health promotion team and outpatients department. Having seen him flourish and inspire others with his passion for the job, she decided to nominate him for the award.

She says: ‘Steven seems to have found his niche. He’s so enthusiastic when he talks and you can’t enthuse others without that. He is a real credit to the department.’
