A back care adviser has created an innovative slide sheet device that ensures patients are safe when they are moved and staff avoid injury.
There are many slide sheets available for moving patients in their bed, but evidence suggests that the type, number and size required, as well as the positioning and way they are used, can be confusing for carers.
This means that the task may not be performed correctly, which can damage the patient’s skin and cause musculo-skeletal injuries to staff.
In response to concerns raised, Diane Hindson, of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, developed the ReDi slide sheet – a one-size-fits-all solution that enables patients to be easily and safely moved or repositioned while maintaining their dignity.
Diane is a finalist in the Innovations in your Specialty category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2016, the profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence.
The award, sponsored by LV Liverpool Victoria, recognises nurses who have made an outstanding contribution to patient care or initiated projects that have made a difference to patients’ lives.
Diane says: ‘I am absolutely thrilled and it’s fantastic for the trust, patients and their carers that the ReDi slide has been shortlisted.
‘The reward for innovating the ReDi slide is knowing that it helps protect patient skin integrity and ensures their comfort and dignity during repositioning, as well as looking after the musculo-skeletal health of carers. To be shortlisted for the prestigious RCNi awards is a wonderful added bonus.’
