A holistic approach to preparing patients for surgery
Winner and Nurse of the Year: An innovative approach to preparing patients for surgery has improved their health and reduced post-operative complications.
Lead upper gastrointestinal clinical nurse specialist Venetia Wynter-Blyth and her team in the oesophago-gastric cancer service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London felt that the traditional peri-operative process missed an opportunity for a more holistic approach.
Venetia devised the PREPARE programme: Physical activity; Remove bad habits; Eat well; Psychological wellbeing; Ask about medications; Respiratory exercises; and Enhanced recovery.
After baseline assessments, the team engages patients in their care, and sets and evaluates goals with them, which puts them in the best position for their surgery and recovery.
The trust is already working towards extending the programme to urology and lung cancer patients this year.
The team is a finalist in the Innovations in your Specialty category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2016, the profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence.
The award, sponsored by LV Liverpool Victoria, recognises nurses who have made an outstanding contribution to patient care or initiated projects that have a made a difference to patients’ lives.
Venetia says: ‘The PREPARE for surgery team is delighted to be nominated for this award.
‘The PREPARE programme is a quality improvement initiative. It is a multiprofessional peri-operative programme of support that aims to put patients in the best possible position for their surgery via patient engagement strategies and tailored goal setting.
‘As a result of this intervention, we have demonstrated a reduction in post-operative complications and improved patient experience.’
