Innovations in Respiratory Award winner - Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2015

Jo-anne Fowles
Lead nurse, ECMO Services, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Jo-anne was part of the team that put together the successful bid for Papworth Hospital to be one of five national centres providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the process of draining venous blood, adding oxygen and removing carbon dioxide before returning it to the patient.

She was responsible for setting up the service, including establishing care pathways and protocols for receiving and collecting patients, as well as issues such as infection control, at Papworth and other centres in the hospital’s geographical remit. Jo-anne is especially proud to have developed the ECMO nurse specialist role.

‘Nurses at the bedside now work independently,’ she says. ‘Patient care is less fragmented and when nurses are talking to relatives they have sufficient knowledge to answer their questions.’ Jo-anne has significantly improved family liaison, helping patients and their families come to terms with their experience in nurse-led follow-up clinics.
