Nurse, health visitor and professional practice teacher Pauline Bigwood was determined to take action on the latest evidence about vitamin D levels and rickets. She devised a campaign to improve awareness and supplementation, and motivated the 0-19 nursing team to deliver it successfully.

To promote discussions with families, a range of ‘Vitamin D for you and me’ resources was designed, including posters and badges saying ‘Ask me about vitamin D’. An information sticker for  parents is now placed in children’s red books following discussions with parents at antenatal contacts, new birth visits, and 12-month and 27-month reviews.

A new pathway tool was also developed in partnership with dietitians to ensure health and education professionals give clear, consistent and evidence-based health promotion messages at every appropriate contact.

More than 70% of parents and carers said they were likely to start using vitamin supplements following the discussions, and the 0-19 team say they feel more informed and confident in their practice.
