Patient's Choice Award finalist - Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2015
Community psychiatric nurse, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust
Kelly has been nominated by patient Susan Hemming, who had been unable to go to university to become an occupational therapist because of her dyslexia. When Kelly took over Susan’s care she was desperate.
‘I had given up on my life,’ says Susan, ‘reverting to my anorexia, self-harming daily and feeling suicidal. Kelly convinced me life hadn’t given up on me yet, and neither had she.’
Many people suggested taking a full-time intensive programme for complex needs, but Kelly researched Susan’s options and persuaded her to test for a college access course. She failed at her first attempt, but Kelly continued to support her and on the next attempt she got in. Susan is now at university studying occupational therapy.
She says: ‘I wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for Kelly. Nobody in my life believed I could do it, least of all me – except for Kelly, that is.’
