Alcohol community nurse, Fulcrum Medical Practice
Jill leads the GP Alcohol Project Team that has reduced hospital admissions, increased engagement with alcohol services and helped raise awareness among people who were drinking heavily but were not yet engaged in services.
I wanted to provide the service in GP practices to avoid the initial feelings of stigmatisation, as patients fear being judged about their alcohol use, Jill says.
She takes a two-pronged approach of treatment for those who need it, and intervention and education for patients not quite at that threshold. Under the initiative, she approaches patients in the waiting room and asks them a series of questions using the AUDIT C tool, a three-item alcohol screening that can help identify people who are hazardous drinkers or have active alcohol use disorders.
As well as assessing immediate health needs, the qualified prescriber can provide detoxification and relapse prevention medication. The team now covers 18 surgeries, with more on a waiting list to join.
