Infection Prevention Award finalist - Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2015

Tanya Kidson and Jill Hassall

Infection prevention and control lead nurse Tanya Kidson and her colleague Jill Hassall identified a need for support and guidance in the independent sector, and began to look at how they could work together with nursing and residential homes to get the best outcome for residents.

They invited link nurses from around Shropshire and Telford to join a working group to develop a set of bespoke assessment tools. The result was Check to Protect tools covering a wide range of issues including hand hygiene, urinary catheterisation and enteral feeding.

Jill says: A review has shown vomiting outbreaks reduced in Check to Protect homes from 15 to seven days and in 2014 there were no hospital admissions due to diarrhoea, dehydration, vomiting or unitary tract infections when norovirus was in the community. The audit also showed that urinary catheter use was reduced as staff became more competent and confident in managing incontinence in other ways.
