Bank Nurse Award winner - Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2015

Elizabeth Browse

Elizabeth, a former ward sister, joined the colorectal nursing team two years ago and has covered four roles in that time – in enhanced recovery, the infusion unit, endoscopy and, currently, colorectal cancer – all of them outside of her ‘comfort zone’.

Consultant nurse Fiona Hibberts, who nominated her for the award, says: ‘All these roles brought new challenges and ways of working and demanded new skills. Liz took them on without complaint and rose to the challenge every time. She seized opportunities and learned on the job – fast! This has enabled the service to continue without compromising on care despite staff shortages.’

Elizabeth’s experience and skills have been invaluable to the team, while her way with patients has also made her stand out.

‘She puts patients at ease with her calm and confident manner, ensuring she understands their situations, clinical conditions and pathway,’ says Fiona.

‘Then she supports them through difficult times, diagnosis and surgery.’
