Georgina has created an education tool to give her peers confidence on their first placement, reduce their anxiety and improve patient care.
Her ‘lightbulb’ moment stemmed from her own ‘terrifying and overwhelming’ experience of a first placement at Southend Hospital in Essex.
There was so much to remember that Georgina made extensive notes on everything from the meaning of abbreviations used at handover to sites for theatre ECG. She worried constantly about forgetting things and making a mistake, and wished there was something that could have helped her be better prepared.
So, the first-year student turned her notes into a set of pocket-sized flashcards – laminated for infection prevention and control – that could be clipped to a belt buckle.
She presented her innovation to the chief nurse and chief executive of Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and they have decided to adopt it.
Georgina now hopes to make sets appropriate for second and third-year students on their placements.
