Supporting Carers Award winner: Angela McDonald

Bereavement trainer for children and families, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Angela provides training to healthcare professionals, families, teachers and carers to help them recognise the emotional and practical needs of children and their families experiencing grief. She developed four one-day workshops covering different aspects of supporting families and children through a bereavement, including communication. She provides emotional support to children and families and helps them find practical support and specialist services. She has developed a set of tools enabling hospital staff to give the right care to children and families, irrespective of place of death. More than 100 practitioners attended the workshops in 2015, including social workers, nursery nurses, health visitors, school nurses, community and district nurses, palliative care nurses, bereavement specialist nurses and nursing students.
