Supporting Carers Award finalist: Admiral Nursing Service

Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Under the leadership of Admiral nurse Pamela Kehoe, this team has introduced a range of measures to improve the experience of the carers of inpatients with dementia. These include psychological support to help carers understand thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and cope with feelings of loss and bereavement. Pamela is there at difficult times, including diagnosis and condition progression, and helps with tough decisions, such as moving a loved one into residential care. A dementia caf helps maintain social contact and carers can visit relatives at any time. There are activities designed for
patients and their carers to share. A new carers survey shows a real improvement in the perception of care for patients and relatives.
