A respiratory nurse specialist has been shortlisted for a prestigious RCNi Nurse Award for developing a safety film inspired by the horrific death of a patient.
Julie Danby, from City Health Care Partnership Hull, is a finalist in the Innovations in your Specialty category, sponsored by LV Liverpool Victoria.
Julie produced a film about the dangers of smoking when prescribed oxygen therapy after a patient fell asleep on his air mattress with a lit cigarette and died from his injuries.
Julie says: ‘I went to the coroner’s court and saw a picture of the body. It was horrific. We had done a risk assessment but could not prevent him smoking in his home. We had even fitted a sprinkler system but he still died.
‘As I sat outside in the car I had a eureka moment and decided to create an education tool to try to prevent another terrible fatality.’
Hull has a high proportion of smokers and there had been a rise in serious incidents related to oxygen therapy, ranging from nasal burns to fatalities.
Julie decided to make an educational film to show patients the devastating consequences that careless smoking can have near home oxygen. With no budget available, Julie joined forces with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Hull College’s Media Department to produce the film.
She says: ‘This hard-hitting film aims to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of vulnerable patients who are at risk of serious injury if they smoke and are on oxygen therapy.
‘It is an educational tool for patients to watch and become aware of the dos and don’ts of smoking or being near a heated source while wearing their oxygen.’
The film is shown to all patients on oxygen and at risk. Incidents have fallen by 40 per cent in the past year and fire services throughout the UK are now using the film as an educational tool.
Julie says: ‘I feel excited at being shortlisted and to represent City Health Care Partnership as a member of this forward- thinking, innovative organisation.
‘The film has received national recognition, is being used by fire and home oxygen services throughout the UK, and has proven successful in reducing recorded, serious untoward injuries in our region.’
