Nursing Older People Award winner: Geraldine Rodgers

Nursing Older People Award winner: Geraldine Rodgers

Nurse consultant for frailty and long-term conditions, NELFT NHS Foundation Trust

Geraldine has reduced violence and aggression and improved safety on an older people’s mental health ward by creating a more homely environment. The ward had a high proportion of patients with dementia, exhibiting increased disorientation and anxiety. Geraldine addressed signage and changed doors and colours to make the ward less institutionalised. Physical aggression incidents have reduced by 40% and antipsychotic prescribing is down 26%, and 64% of patients now feel extremely safe.
