These four practice nurses have devised and introduced care plans to address violent behaviour and reduce the use of restraint. The nurse and individual together develop the Person-Centred Physical Intervention Protocol that identifies measures to reduce crisis behaviours. The care plan helps de-escalate aggressive incidents early and includes how, when needed, restraint can be used safely and respectfully. The team provides regular ‘clinical in-reach’ to inpatient settings to ensure training is taken into practice, while link nurses have been trained for sustainability. Ward managers say the plans are reducing the severity of challenging behaviours and giving staff more confidence in dealing with them.
