Nurse Awards

Leadership Award finalist: Gloria Rowland

Leadership Award finalist: Gloria Rowland

Associate director of midwifery and gynaecology nursing, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust

Gloria transformed the maternity department at James Paget University Hospital in Norfolk in her previous role. Staff morale was very low and sickness rates high while the service for mothers and babies needed improvement. The complaints and governance processes needed to be strengthened. After evaluating the situation, Gloria set about prioritising plans to turn the unit around by sharing her vision to the whole team. She improved safety, refurbished the delivery suite, ensured service user feedback was collected and acted on and developed effective arrangements for vulnerable women. Excellent practice was celebrated and a learning culture developed through the creation of a maternity clinical incidents panel. The CQC now rates the unit ‘good’.
