Leadership Award finalist: Delirium Care Group

Leadership Award finalist: Delirium Care Group

Senior staff nurse, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

A successful drive to increase nurses’ ability to diagnose delirium has earned this team a place on the leadership shortlist. A two-week audit showed that 26% of patients on her unit had delirium, but 66% was undiagnosed. Team leader Siby Sikhamoni researched the evidence and then embedded a new validated screening tool called Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) into daily practice to improve patient care. A group of eight enthusiastic nurses – the Delirium Care Group – took the project forward. Siby introduced structured training delivered by the group, including one-to-one teaching and observation. This was supported by a delirium awareness week and posters mounted in staff areas.
