Innovation Award winner: Prepare for Surgery Team
Innovations in your Specialty Award winner: Prepare for Surgery Team
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
An innovative approach to preparing patients for surgery has improved their health and reduced post-operative complications at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Lead upper gastrointestinal clinical nurse specialist Venetia Wynter-Blyth and her team in the oesophagogastric cancer service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust felt that the traditional perioperative approach missed an opportunity for a more holistic approach, including diet and nutrition, psychological wellbeing and physical fitness. In answer to this, Venetia devised the PREPARE programme Physical activity; Remove bad habits; Eat well; Psychological wellbeing; Ask about medications; Respiratory exercises; Enhanced recovery. After making baseline assessments, the team engages patients in their care, setting goals with them and making evaluations, and putting them in the best position for their surgery and recovery.
