Innovations in your Specialty Award finalist: Julie Danby
Respiratory nurse specialist, City Health Care Partnership CIC
A patient’s horrific death led Julie to develop a hard-hitting education tool about the dangers of smoking when prescribed oxygen. After seeing a picture of the patient’s injuries at the inquest, she decided to make an educational film for patients. With no budget available, Julie joined forces with the fire service and media college students to produce the film, which shows the devastating consequences that careless smoking can have near home oxygen. The film is now shown to all patients on oxygen and at risk. Serious incidents have fallen by 40% in the past year, some patients have given up smoking and fire services throughout the UK are using it as an education tool.
