Community Nursing Award finalist: Donna Rowe

Fracture liaison / osteoporosis nurse specialist, Rushcliffe Clinical Commissioning Group

Donna started a new fracture liaison service to improve the care of people with osteoporosis by identifying patients at risk and delivering IV bisphosphonates as a first-line treatment. Evidence showed that patients care in the community was inadequate. The new service identifies those struggling with traditional treatments, secures access to bone health specialists and, where appropriate, offers IV zoledronate as a viable, accessible and affordable community treatment. Donna has written guidelines, ensured robust governance is in place, built links with community physiotherapists and the falls team, and systematically trawled through the notes of 7,000 patients to identify who might benefit from her service.
