Child Health Award finalist: Chris McDermott

School nursing practice development lead, CSH Surrey

A programme is tackling obesity in children and young people in Surrey by harnessing school nurses’ knowledge and skills. Helped by a dietitian, Chris McDermott designed the bespoke, evidence-based initiative to support long-term lifestyle and behaviour change. Participants and their families are assigned a specially trained school nurse for one-to-one and telephone support throughout the seven-part Healthy Weight, Healthy Lifestyles programme. It includes topics such as diet and nutrition, lifestyle tips and physical activity. Parent feedback shows significant evidence of lifestyle changes among the 25 participants referred since May 2015 and most are reporting stabilised BMIs and weight loss.
