Cancer Nursing Award winner: Aylesford Unit Nursing Team

Cancer Nursing Award winner: Aylesford Unit Nursing Team

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust

Nurse consultant Carole Connor has developed a nurse-led comprehensive acute oncology service at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, including an outpatient chemotherapy service seven days a week. A team of advanced nurse practitioners assumes many roles and procedures previously undertaken by medical staff, including prescribing chemotherapy. There is a continual focus on education and development and no waiting list. Patients receive treatment within 15 minutes of their appointment time. Patients have a tailored ‘just in case’ pack to take to A&E, should they develop complications. The trust has commissioned the team to open another unit at Stratford Hospital.
