RCN president pledges support during Christmas Day visit

Cecilia Anim will tell staff working the Christmas Day shift how proud the RCN is of the work they do

Nurses working the Christmas Day shift were due to receive a special visitor today – and it wasn’t Santa.

RCN president Cecilia Anim has given up part of her festive break every year since being elected deputy in 2011 to visit hospitals in London.

This year her chosen destination is the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As well as helping to raise spirits among staff who are unable to be with their own families, Ms Anim is spreading a very important message.

She said: ‘Many of our members, once they start work, naturally get their heads down and get stuck into the job.

‘This is exactly what they should do, but sometimes they might forget that RCN is here to help and support them as they show loyalty and commitment to our profession.

‘I find out about their lives, listen to their concerns and point them in the direction of college services which can help.’

2016 is likely to be a very significant year in nursing with the introduction of revalidation, the loss of student bursaries and a campaign for safe staffing levels all sure to be key issues.

Ms Anim, who will later attend mass before celebrating Chistmas with her son, added: ‘My message to nurses for the coming 12 months is that we will do our best to support you every step of the way, protect your wellbeing and help you give the excellent care patients deserve.’
