RCN claims victory for members in pay negotiation with BMI Healthcare
The RCN says the action of its members has secured an improved offer from BMI Healthcare on weekend and overtime pay
The RCN has said that months of negotiations by its employment relations team have secured ‘a much improved offer’ on pay for its members working for BMI Healthcare.
The private healthcare company – one of the largest in the UK – proposed a number of changes to its staff’s terms and conditions in April which included no unsocial hours payments at weekends and no overtime pay.
But the RCN has announced that, after its members filed grievances and raised their concerns, an improved offer has been secured.
BMI Healthcare, which runs 61 hospitals and treatment centres and employs around 9,500 staff, is now offering weekend pay of time and a third to all its employees, including both clinical and support workers.
All non-managerial staff, both clinical and non-clinical, will get overtime rates ranging from time and a quarter to double time.
RCN director of nursing and service delivery Tom Sandford said: ‘This is a huge victory for staff, and a testament to the RCN’s ability to build constructive relationships and use solid, evidence based arguments.
‘The new deal would not have been achieved without the hard work of RCN members who helped to raise the issue and make their concerns clear and is a positive result for all sides.’
The college is recommending its members accept the new offer, which it says is the best that can be achieved through negotiation, and will ballot members from August 17 to September 1.
BMI Healthcare human resources director Keith Luxon said: ‘Thanks to the efforts of our staff engagement forum and the feedback from our staff, supported by their representatives, we have successfully designed a national set of employment conditions that are fair to our employees and will enable BMI to continue to develop and offer great services and care.’
