Patient sets up website to ease pressure on ward nurses

Patient Latest website aims to free up nurses' time by acting as a hub for updates

A bone marrow transplant patient has set up a website that enables people to receive updates about their loved ones in hospital.

Martin Clarke, from North Tyneside, hopes Patient Latest will reduce the burden on patients and staff, who have to repeat themselves when giving progress reports to various friends and family.

Patient Latest, which was launched last month, is offering a free private information page on its website so a spouse, parent, next of kin, authorised caregiver or the patient can input information. Mr Clarke explained the pages are confidential and take minutes to set up.

He said: ‘It can be an emotionally draining time when you are in hospital and it can be hard just to gather a few words together to talk.

‘When my father was in hospital I remember the nurse saying I was the third person to call in 20 minutes and the other two people were my brothers. There can be a lack of communication among family and friends when someone is in hospital and this website is a way of getting around that and perhaps giving back a bit of precious time to those who work in the NHS.’
