Online learning module highlights steroid safety

Regulator launches guide for healthcare professionals on side effects and interactions of corticosteroids

An online learning module on the side effects of steroid medication has been launched by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The interactive programme, designed for nurses, doctors and pharmacists, details the possible side effects of corticosteroids, which are used to treat conditions such as arthritis and asthma. High blood pressure, nausea and stomach irritation are among the problems that can be caused by this medication.

Director of the MRHA's vigilance and risk management of medicines division Dr June Raine said: ‘Our new module carefully takes you through the unwanted effects of these immensely valuable and widely used medicines. It will help clinicians take the right decisions and protect patients from avoidable harm.'
