Nursing strategy outlines importance of patient feedback

Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust publishes Nursing Strategy 2016-2021

Nurses are being asked to get patient and carer feedback on all aspects of the care they provide and to respond to it, under a new strategy launched by Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW).

The strategy, launched on April 9 at an event for registered nurses and nursing assistants, was developed with professional leads for nursing across the trust after consultation workshops with nurses.

It stresses the importance of allowing nurses to focus on their own physical health and wellbeing, stating: ‘It is clear that when staff are feeling well and satisfied with their work that the experience of our patients improves. We must therefore support our nursing workforce to develop a culture where personal health and wellbeing is embraced.’

The strategy includes developing a nursing academy to provide opportunities for nurses’ professional development. It also aims to ensure nurse learning and development is based on integrated care.

The trust wants its nurses to be able to develop holistic recovery plans for patients.

GMW director of nursing and operations Gill Green said: ‘It is our job to empower and support our nurses in being able to deliver the best care possible in welcoming and calming environments, and to inspire our service users that there is hope and a pathway to recovery.’
