Nurses star in YouTube video

Two nurses discuss a case study and other features of their alcohol dependency service in YouTube video

Two nurses who help patients manage alcohol dependency in Nottinghamshire have featured in a short online video about their service.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s alcohol related long-term conditions (LTC) team created the YouTube film to ‘challenge the stigma associated with severe alcohol problems and the notion that people cannot change their behaviour’.

Team leader Mark Holmes appears alongside nurse colleague Emma Dodd to discuss the intensive case management provided to a patient called ‘Greg’.

Mr Holmes said his team hopes the video ‘raises the profile of the fantastic outcomes services like ours can achieve, not only for the service user, but the overall healthcare system’.

On camera he talks about ‘flipping it [the normal service] on its head’ and instead of patients being required to attend appointments at clinics, he says: ‘We know you are in trouble; we are going to go out to you.'

Ms Dodd adds that patients using the service ‘don’t reach crisis points as often’ because nurses like her ‘put the brakes on’ before they get to that point.
