Branches of The Gym, in regions including London, Luton and Bournemouth, are running the offer until August 17, and allowing nurses free access to all of their equipment, facilities and personal trainers.

The Nurses’ Week promotion is designed partly to encourage shift workers to use the gym more.

Antony Aleagha, general manager of the Alperton branch in London, said: ‘We have seen a growing number of shift workers that make the most of our 24-hour, modern facilities to suit their lifestyles.

‘We want to help people overcome any perceived barriers to keeping fit and maintaining their health.’

Fay Sabini, a cardiology nurse who uses the gym, said: ‘The job can get very busy and pressurised so a visit to the gym helps me get rid of all that excess energy and to unwind after a long day.

‘I like to make use of the 24-hour opening times, so sometimes after a night shift of 12 and a half hours I go to the gym at 11pm and leave around 1am.’
