Nurses and their fellow choir members from an NHS hospital trust in London are excitedly monitoring music sales this week to see if they can clinch the Christmas number one chart position.

Sales and downloads of the song A Bridge Over You by Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir have been counting towards the coveted top spot since one minute past midnight on Friday.

By the weekend it was outselling the favourite – Love Yourself by Justin Bieber by around 2,000 copies.

A campaign called NHS 4 Xmas No1 has been promoting the song, which is a mash-up of Fix You by Coldplay and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.

Fans who want to see the track emerge victorious have until midnight on Christmas Eve to buy it.

A spokesperson for the NHS campaign said: ‘It would be absolutely incredible to get the Christmas number one.

‘It would give everyone who works for the NHS such a boost, to know the public were so firmly behind them. It would also hopefully generate some sustained positive publicity, which so many staff richly deserve.’

Proceeds from the single will be shared between the charities Carers UK and Mind.

The official Christmas singles chart top 40 will be counted down on BBC Radio 1’s chart show from 10am-1pm on Christmas Day.
