NMC to change readmissions procedure

Nursing and Midwifery Council is changing the way it deals with people whose registration has expired

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is changing the way it deals with people when their registration expires.

From November, nurses and midwives will no longer have a grace period of three months after their registration expiry date has passed to pay their annual fee to the NMC.

Currently, NMC registrants can pay their fee up to three months after their registration expires without needing to reapply to be on the register, although it is illegal for them to practise if their registration has lapsed.

The regulator is writing to all those whose registration expires from November onwards to say they will have to go through the readmissions process, which can take up to six weeks, if they do not pay before the expiry date.

The NMC says keeping the three-month grace period would prevent registrants from paying their fee in instalments, which they will be able to do from early next year.
